Archaeological excavations conducted by the Department of Archaeology in Historic Jeddah have revealed at this site have revealed a roughly 40-meter-long section of the northern fortifications of historic Jeddah, including Bab Madinah, the city's northern gate. The earliest recorded mention of a wall surrounding the city comes from the 11th -century AD traveller, poet, and philosopher Nāṣir-i Khusraw. Over time, the city's fortifications were rebuilt multiple times in response to the evolving size and needs of the urban population. The segment visible at this site dates to at least the mid-18th century AD and represents one of the final phases of construction prior to the demolition of Jeddah’s fortifications in 1947, which left only the lower portions of the structure intact. Notably, there are strong indications that the remains at this location were constructed atop an earlier fortification wall, possibly dating back to the early 16th century AD.
