Al Shona

ca. 10th century AH / ca. 16th century AD

Archaeological excavations conducted by the Department of Archaeology in Historic Jeddah have revealed the earliest preserved part of the site is located in the northwest corner, where the remains of a fortified corner tower were uncovered, indicating the military function of the site. It was likely constructed in the late Mamluk period (16th century AD). In the 19th century AD, the site was enlarged and served as a governmental warehouse, known as shona, for storing grain, timber, ammunition, and other materials. Later, during most of the 20th century AD, the site was used as a private warehouse by local merchants, storing imported goods from various parts of the world .
